I first ventured to Annapolis, MD, with my travel lacrosse team in high school. Since that time, I’ve been fortunate to return to the Chesapeake Bay area on several occasions. The nature of my visits often differ, but one thing remains the same: I never want to leave. Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning for the 101st time, there is so much to see, do and explore in Annapolis. Below we have compiled our Quick Guide to Annapolis to help you plan your trip.

Naval Academy

Naval Academy Chapel

Did you know the US Naval Academy is open to the public? The second oldest service academy in the United States, the US Naval Academy (also known as USNA, Annapolis, or simply Navy) is a four-year coeducational federal service academy in Annapolis, Maryland. The best way to experience the United States Naval Academy as a visitor is to take a guided walking tour. (DTN Tip: Located in the Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center inside Gate 1, the Information Desk offers guided tours daily for large and small groups.)

The Chesapeake Bay Bridges Cruise

Annapolis, Maryland

Who doesn’t love a boat ride? On this unique cruise of the Chesapeake Bay, riders have the opportunity to cruise under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge that connects the eastern and western shorts of Maryland. The narrated 90-minute tour also provides visitors a chance explore Annapolis from an entirely different perspective. (DTN Tip: Children under two are invited to ride for free.)

USNA Museum

As one of the most visited attractions of the Academy, the USNA Museum stands as a reminder of our country’s military history and prowess. Welcoming over 100,000 visitors a year, the Museum offers two stories of world-class exhibits covering the U.S. Navy’s development, its history, and the roles in which the USNA played to make the Navy what it is today. (DTN Tip: The Museum is free and open to the public Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Boatyard Bar & Grill

Getting Hungry? Once you’ve worked up an appetite, be sure to swing by the Boatyard Bar & Grill to grab a bite to eat. Serving up some of the best crab cakes in the region, Boatyard is always hopping with a bustling mix of tourists and locals. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, order a plate of Patty’s Fattys, an entire plate of big, fresh oysters locally-harvested each morning. (DTN Tip: Boatyard is open for brunch on weekends and holidays. Try the shrimp and grits!)
