Venture outdoors and get to know some flora and fauna in the Lewiston area over at Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary. It’s a 450-acre wildlife preserve which has been actively engaged in conservation work over the last 80 years. You can bird watch, hike, picnic, ski, and sled. If you have a bike, there are some excellent paths at the Auburn Riverwalk.  The Riverwalk trail takes visitors alongside the Androscoggin River and provides incredible views of the downtown twin cities area, gardens, and outdoor art. The Lewiston side of the trail ends by Lewiston’s Railroad Park– another popular park in the vicinity. Railroad Park is where the Great Falls Balloon Festival takes place in mid-August each year. It’s a hot air balloon festival in between Lewiston and Auburn that has been going on since 1993.
