Dogs make everything better.

A leisurely hike is much more fun with your four-legged friend in tow. In this post are a handful of the most dog-friendly locales in the country to enjoy some fresh air and get a workout, too.

Red Rock Canyon (Nevada)

Providing not only stunning views but excellent walking and hiking trails, Red Rock Canyon is one of the best places to bring your pup (on its leash). The Calico Tanks, Ice Box Canyon, and Pine Creek Canyon trails are all excellent options for moderate hikes. Craving a challenge? Turtlehead Peak trail is rated as difficult, but the views are so worth it.

Beaver Brook Trail (Colorado)

This 11-mile loop trail in Golden, Colorado is a favorite among locals and their canine companions. It offers beautiful mountain vistas and a variety of scenery and terrain. Like Red Rock Canyon, Fido must be kept on his leash at all times here.

Runyon Canyon (California)

This Los Angeles canyon is a popular destination for hikers to begin with. But it’s even more fun when you have the company of the furred kind. Smack-dab in the center of Hollywood, the trail can draw quite the crowd—especially on weekends. However, if you’re willing to brave them, you’ll be rewarded with Instagram-worthy shots. And maybe a celebrity sighting or two. The canyon also has some off-leash areas where pups can frolic and socialize.

North Carolina Arboretum (North Carolina)

Asheville’s North Carolina Arboretum combines 65+ acres of beautiful plants and trees with 10 miles of trails that are perfect for hiking and biking. Leashed dogs are welcome anywhere on the property except for the inside of buildings and the Bonsai Exhibition Garden.

The Appalachian Trail (Maine-Georgia)

The beauty of the Appalachian is that if you’re on the East Coast, you’re never all that far from the trail, which crosses through 14 states. While a multi-day (or longer) hike might be beyond your dog’s endurance and ability, a day hike on a local part of the trail might be just perfect. Pups are welcome everywhere on the trail except The Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and Baxter State Park in Maine.
