How Long to Drive Kansas?

At just 13.2 miles, Kansas has the shortest Route 66 stretch of any state. You can drive it end to end in about 20 minutes without stopping. But the three towns along this stretch — Galena, Riverton, and Baxter Springs — each have enough character and history to warrant slowing down. Here's how to plan your time.

1The Quick Pass — 1–2 Hours

If you're just passing through between Missouri and Oklahoma, budget 1–2 hours. Drive through Galena for a quick photo at Cars on the Route (the rusty tow truck that inspired Mater from Pixar's Cars), stop at the Riverton General Store for a snack and Route 66 souvenirs, and photograph the Marsh Rainbow Arch Bridge near Baxter Springs before crossing into Oklahoma. It's fast but satisfying.

2The Proper Visit — 3–4 Hours (Recommended)

This gives you time to actually explore each town. In Galena, visit the Mining & Historical Museum (free, 1 hour) and browse Cars on the Route. In Riverton, grab a sandwich at the General Store and walk the old bridge. In Baxter Springs, explore the Heritage Center & Museum ($5, 1 hour) and see the restored 1930s Phillips 66 gas station. This pace lets you soak in the small-town character.

3The Full Experience — Half Day

Combine the Kansas stretch with lunch at one of the local restaurants, a walk along Spring River, and time to chat with locals who are passionate about their Route 66 heritage. The Galena and Baxter Springs communities have invested heavily in preservation, and the stories you'll hear from shopkeepers and museum volunteers are often the best part of the visit.

4Where to Base

There are no major hotels on the Kansas Route 66 stretch itself. Most travelers base in Joplin, Missouri (15 minutes east of Galena) or Miami, Oklahoma (20 minutes south of Baxter Springs). Joplin has the widest selection of hotels ($60–120/night) and restaurants. If you want something more authentic, the Riverton area has a few B&Bs and vacation rentals.

3–4 hours is perfect — enough to see everything without feeling rushed or padded.

Combine Kansas with your Joplin (Missouri) and Miami (Oklahoma) stops for a full day.

The Marsh Rainbow Arch Bridge is the only remaining rainbow arch bridge on all of Route 66 — don't skip it.
