Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta

The world's largest hot air balloon event. Over 500 balloons launch in mass ascensions at dawn, creating one of the most photographed spectacles in the world. Over 800,000 visitors attend annually. Dawn patrol launches begin before sunrise, and evening 'glow' events illuminate hundreds of balloons against the desert night sky. Food vendors, live music, and chainsaw carving competitions fill the grounds throughout the nine-day festival.

Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial

One of the oldest and largest Native American cultural events in the world, held since 1922. Features traditional dances from dozens of tribal nations, a professional all-Indian rodeo, juried art markets with Navajo rugs, Hopi kachinas, and Zuni jewelry, a Saturday morning parade through downtown Gallup, and traditional food from fry bread to mutton stew. The ceremonial dances at Red Rock Park's natural amphitheatre are unforgettable.

Tucumcari celebrates Route 66's 100th anniversary with a neon-lit festival along the historic boulevard. The Blue Swallow Motel and Tee Pee Curios host open houses, classic cars line the strip, and live music fills the desert night. A neon sign lighting ceremony kicks off Saturday evening, and guided walking tours of Tucumcari's iconic neon signs run throughout both days. Local food vendors serve New Mexican cuisine and BBQ.

Albuquerque Route 66 Summerfest

Central Avenue's Nob Hill district hosts a two-day street festival celebrating Route 66's Centennial. The event closes several blocks of historic Route 66 to traffic, filling them with live music on three stages, a classic car cruise, local food vendors, craft beer from New Mexico breweries, and an art walk through Nob Hill's galleries and boutiques. Saturday night features a 'Neon Nights' walking tour of Albuquerque's vintage signs.

Book accommodations 3–6 months ahead for the Balloon Fiesta (October). Albuquerque hotels sell out fast. Tucumcari and Santa Fe fill up for their events too.

Albuquerque sits at 5,312 feet and Santa Fe at 7,199 feet. Drink extra water, take it easy on day one, and pack sunscreen — UV rays are significantly stronger at altitude.
