If you love nature, blue skies, ocean views, and horses then you need to visit Assateague Island on the Eastern Shore.

Two Parks

Assateague Island is made up of close to 40-miles of plain gorgeous beach views. It’s considered one of the best beaches on the entire East Coast and you will know exactly why once you’re on it. It’s made up of a State Park and National Park with plenty of wildlife and room for outdoor recreation.

See and Do

Wildlife

Assateague Island is much quieter than popular Ocean City Beach, making it the perfect place to get away from everyday life. There you will find feral horses wandering about and eagles soaring in the sky.

When viewing the horses, it’s important to keep a safe distance. They are beautiful but keep in mind, they are also wild animals. This means they can charge, kick, or bite if humans get too close. But don’t let that scare you from the experience. You can watch them from a distance, running along the beach and grazing in the grass. If you stop at each park’s visitor center before roaming the beach, you can learn more information on the history of the island and the animals that live there.

Interested in seeing more wildlife? At the nature center, you can find even more native animals up close and personal like blue crabs, sea stars, and box turtles.

Outdoor Activities

The best time of the year to visit the beach is during the warmer months. Summertime is when you can really enjoy all the island has to offer like swimming, picnicking, kayaking, snorkeling, biking, hiking, and camping.

However, summertime does tend to be busier, like any other tourist attraction. So, plan to start your day early or stay inside the park overnight. Find more information about camping here
