Did you know, one of the most traveled highways in the state of Utah is US 89.
It runs for more than 500 miles through the center of the state from north to south. And nature-lovers won’t want to miss it, as it passes through some of the most beautiful stretches of the entire Western U.S. It also has a rich and often-changing history, which dates all the way back to 1926, though it was entirely different back then than its current layout.
Ready for adventure? Pack your bags and head out.
As you drive on 89 into Utah from the south, you’ll pass by Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and a tiny desert town with a large name, Big Water, which borders Lake Powell and the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument. One of the biggest draws, however, is Zion National Park, which promises jaw-dropping red cliffs, hanging gardens, and rushing waterfalls. Fortunately, the park is just a short drive from the Mt. Carmel Junction, where 89 meets SR-9.
Not long after, the route heads down through Sevier Canyon towards Bryce Canyon, another significant landmark. It attracts close to two million visitors every year. Take in the incredible geological formations and the largest collection of hoodoos (columns of eroded, weathered rock) in the world, and lush forests with hiking trails.
What would a trip to Utah be without a visit its most well-known city? Route 89 conveniently runs through Salt Lake City, where there is plenty to explore. Also the Capitol Building, there’s Temple Square, the headquarters of the Mormon Church, as well as the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and Hogle Zoo.
Just about 40 miles north of SLC, 89 crosses into the city of Ogden, which is renowned for its access to popular ski areas and boasts Historic 25th Street, a charming shopping, and dining district. Later on, before you reach Idaho, the Logan Canyon Scenic Byway offers gorgeous views, and Bear Lake Summit holds claim to the title of the highest point on Route 89 in the state.
