Best Time to Visit Missouri Route 66
Timing your Missouri Route 66 trip right can make the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one. Missouri's 317-mile stretch of the Mother Road passes through diverse terrain — from the urban buzz of St. Louis to the quiet Ozark hills — and each season brings a different experience.
1Spring (April–May) — Best Overall
Spring is the sweet spot for Missouri Route 66. Temperatures are mild (60–75°F), wildflowers bloom along the roadside, and all attractions are open after the winter closure. The Route 66 Birthday Celebration in Springfield (late April) kicks off the Centennial season. Hotel rates are moderate, and you'll avoid summer crowds at popular stops like Meramec Caverns and the Gateway Arch.
2Summer (June–August) — Everything Open, Hot & Humid
Summer guarantees every attraction, diner, and motel is open — including seasonal spots like the 66 Drive-In Theatre in Carthage (Fri-Sat only, Apr-Sep). The downside: Missouri summers are hot and humid, regularly hitting 90°F+ with thick humidity. The St. Louis Blues & BBQ Festival (July) is a highlight. Air-conditioned stops like Meramec Caverns (60°F year-round) and the City Museum are welcome relief.
3Fall (September–October) — Peak Scenery
Fall is spectacular on Missouri Route 66. The Ozark hills explode with autumn color in October, creating stunning backdrops for your road trip photos. The International Route 66 Mother Road Festival in Springfield (late September) is the biggest Route 66 event in the state. Temperatures cool to comfortable 60–75°F, crowds thin out, and the light is perfect for photography.
4Winter (November–March) — The Centennial Gala
Most small-town attractions and seasonal restaurants close November through March. However, the Route 66 Centennial Gala on November 11, 2026 at the Gateway Arch is THE marquee event of the entire Centennial year. St. Louis stays open year-round with indoor attractions. If you're only visiting for the Gala, book months ahead — it will be the most sought-after ticket on all of Route 66.
