How Long to Drive Texas Route 66

Texas's 178-mile Route 66 stretch is one of the shortest state segments, but Amarillo alone can fill a full day. Here's how to plan your time from Glenrio to Shamrock.

1Express — Half Day

If you're just passing through, the drive from Shamrock to Amarillo (with I-40) takes about 2 hours. Add quick stops at U-Drop Inn in Shamrock (20 min photo stop), Cadillac Ranch (30 min), and the Big Texan sign (10 min) for a packed 4-hour run.

2Recommended — 1 Full Day

Start in Shamrock at the U-Drop Inn (1 hour for photos + museum). Drive to McLean for Devil's Rope Museum (45 min). Stop at Midpoint Cafe in Adrian for lunch (1 hour). Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo (45 min with spray painting). Big Texan Steak Ranch for dinner. This is the ideal single-day itinerary.

3Deep Dive — 2 Days

Day 1: Shamrock → McLean → Adrian → Amarillo (Big Texan dinner). Stay overnight in Amarillo.

Day 2: Cadillac Ranch at sunrise, Palo Duro Canyon (half day — the 'Grand Canyon of Texas'), explore Amarillo's historic Route 66 district on 6th Street, drive to Glenrio ghost town on the NM border.

4Don't Miss

Even on the express run, these three stops are non-negotiable: U-Drop Inn (Shamrock), Cadillac Ranch (Amarillo), and Big Texan Steak Ranch (Amarillo). Each takes 20–45 minutes and they're the three most iconic stops on Texas Route 66.

lightbulbPro Tips

1 full day is the sweet spot — you'll hit everything without rushing.

Cadillac Ranch is best at sunrise (fewer crowds, better light) or sunset (golden glow).

The Big Texan shuttle runs free from many Amarillo hotels — no need to drive after dinner.

Glenrio ghost town on the TX/NM border is worth the detour if you have time — eerie and photogenic.
