There are many worthwhile roads to take when traveling through the Carolinas and Tennessee. And The Cherohala Skyway is at the top of the list. Picture this: Almost 40-miles of forested mountains, backcountry, and sheer natural beauty. Are you ready to experience it? Get a small taste of it inside this post.

Cherohala Skyway

The Cherohala Scenic Byway starts in Robbinsville, North Carolina, and ends in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. It passes several hills and twists (including what’s known as “The Tail of the Dragon”) and panoramic views along the way. It’s become a popular road trip for motorcyclists and sports car owners but it’s a must-see for anyone.

During the 3-hour drive, visitors will pass through two National Forests- Cherokee and Nantahala. The name Cherohala is a mixture of the two names.

Things to See and Do

Like many scenic drives, there are plenty of places to stop the car, mosey down a hiking trail or two, take pictures nearby a waterfall, and stop for a picnic lunch. There a few restroom facilities and shops along the way but that’s it. So be sure to gas up before you go.

Where to Eat

If you don’t pack a picnic and are looking to eat in the area. Here are some of the top-rated bites to eat.

Stop for breakfast and pastries as the Tellico Grains Bakery where the bread is made fresh daily.

For lunch, if you’re in the mood for homemade soups and giant sandwiches, pull over at the Tellico Kats Deli and Cafe, where you can eat lunch on the deck with a fantastic river view.

When to Visit

The best time to visit is during the Fall months when colorful autumn leaves frame the trees and pathways. Spring and Summer are great also.

The worst time to visit, however, is during the Winter months when the roads are slick and dangerous.
