It starts with a sniffle. Then there’s a sneeze. Before you know it, you are bedridden, medicated and entirely out of commission.

Nobody likes being sick. Staying healthy is especially challenging for business travelers, who spend most of their time in close proximity with others. Airplanes, busses, and taxis can be breeding grounds for bacteria, so what is a business traveler to do?

The answer involves a proactive approach that focuses on overall health and wellness, says Dr. Mehmet Oz of the Dr. Oz Show. Preparing healthy meals, taking vitamins (ask your doctor before beginning any vitamin regimen) and staying hydrated will help reduce your chances of getting sick.

Our DrivetheNation.com team has compiled a few additional tips to help business travelers stay healthy on the road:

Wash Your Hands

One of the best ways to protect your health is hand washing. It sounds simple – and it is! Washing your hands for 20 seconds with regular soap can be one of the most effective ways to prevent catching the cold or flu, says Dr. Oz.

Get Exercise

It can be hard to incorporate an exercise routine into an already packed schedule, but it’s vitally important in reducing stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Harvard researchers also believe there is a direct link between exercise and immunity. For business travelers, this may mean booking a hotel with a gym.

Fly Smart

Airports are germy. Americans make more than 405 million long-distance business trips per year and that means large crowds at the airports. To prevent catching the cold or flu, avoid contact with door handles, railings and counters. To expedite the security screening process and avoid having to take off your shoes, business travelers can enroll in TSA-Precheck.

Get Plenty of Rest

Business travelers are accustomed to long days, but burning the candle at both ends can greatly compromise overall health. Experts recommend getting at least eight hours of sleep every night. A quick nap on the plane can provide temporary relief, but a good night’s rest is the best way to wake up feeling restored and rejuvenated.
